  1. The relative risk represents the relative risk of death associated with each incremental increase in quartile (e.g. 50th to 75th quartile) among the iron parameters. The following cutoff values were used to assign patients to the various groupings: (1) serum ferritin ≥ 1,000 ng/mL, (2) greater than 25 transfused units of red cells, and (3) bone marrow iron stain of 6+. The Transplant Iron Score is calculated by assigning patients one point for each of the values above the cutoff.
