The relative risk represents the relative risk of death associated with each incremental increase in quartile (e.g. 50^th to 75^th quartile) among the iron parameters. The following cutoff values were used to assign patients to the various groupings: (1) serum ferritin ≥ 1,000 ng/mL, (2) greater than 25 transfused units of red cells, and (3) bone marrow iron stain of 6+. The Transplant Iron Score is calculated by assigning patients one point for each of the values above the cutoff.
*The calculated relative risks were scaled (i.e. scored on a 0-3 scale) to allow comparisons to the individual iron quartiles.
